The Trumps have been going out of their way to be kind to the Bush family in the wake of the death of former President George H.W. Bush.
First Lady Melania Trump reached out to former First Lady Laura Bush, inviting her and other members of the family to the White House to see the Christmas decorations and to visit with the staff.
While the visit was private and there were no official pictures of the visit, Laura Bush subsequently posted about the visit on Instagram, showing a crowd of bushes under the White House picture of the 41st president which was draped in black cloth, in recognition of his passing.
“A sweet visit during this somber week,” Mrs. Bush wrote. “Thanks to Mrs. Trump for inviting our family to the White House to see the Christmas decorations and our old friends, the residence staff.”
Then in the afternoon on Tuesday, the President and the First Lady went to Blair House, across the street from the White House, to pay a condolence call on the family. The Trumps have been putting the Bush family up at Blair House while they are in town for the services.
All the living presidents were assembled in a historic moment at the funeral on Wednesday with the Trumps sitting next to the Obamas, the Clintons and the Carters. George W. Bush was across the aisle sitting with his family. And again, comity ruled with the Trumps shaking hands with the Obamas.
George W. Bush delivered a tearful eulogy to his father.
After the funeral, the former president’s body will be taken back to Texas on Air Force One for another service in Houston. He then will be laid to rest with his wife and his daughter Robin who died from leukemia at age 3 in 1953 at the Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.
