The woman who accused Congressman Keith Ellison of violently abusing her during their relationship in 2016 made her first television appearance to discuss the alleged abuse.
CBS Evening News interviewed Karen Monahan about the physical and emotional abuse she allegedly suffered while in a relationship with Ellison, the deputy chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
Per CBS News:
On Thursday, Monahan, 44, spoke on camera for the first time about an incident she said happened nearly two years ago.
Monahan said she has video of what happened but that it’s too traumatic for her, so she has chosen not to share it with anyone. CBS News has not seen the video.
Monahan said that in September of 2016, she and her then boyfriend, Ellison, got into a heated argument that scared her. She said it started when he came into a room where she was laying on a bed, listening to a podcast. He asked her to take out the trash and when he asked if she heard him, she shook her head.
“He looked at me, goes ‘Hey you f***ing hear me … and then he looked at me, he goes ‘Bitch, get the f*** out of my house,’ and he started to try to drag me off the bed,” Monahan said. “That’s when I put my camera on to video him.”
According to the report, Mohanan described the incident to a friend and said she was at the “lowest of the low.”
Ellison, who recently won the Democrat primary to be the next Minnesota attorney general, has denied the allegations.
“I’m mortified, absolutely stunned that she would say this,” Ellison said concerning the allegations, as BizPac Review reports. He also said there “couldn’t be such a thing” as what Karen and her son Austin describe “because I never did that.”
Earlier this week, Mohanan’s son first surfaced the allegations in a social media post where he said he spoke on behalf of himself and his brother. In the post, he detailed a number of abuses and said his mother had to endure “hell” while she was dating Ellison. Mohanan confirmed the abuse and contents of the post before deleting her Facebook.
“My name is Austin Monahan and I am writing this letter on behalf of me and my brother,” Karen’s son wrote in the social media post. “My brother and I watched our mom come out of pure hell after getting out of her relationship with Keith Ellison.”
“For several months we knew something wasn’t right and couldn’t figure it out. When we asked our mom if everything was ok, she told us she was dealing with some stress and would be ok,” Austin continued.
And, “In the middle of 2017, I was using my mom’s computer trying to download something and I clicked on a file, I found over 100 text and twitters messages and video almost 2 min long that showed Keith Ellison dragging my mama off the bed by her feet, screaming and calling her a ‘f**king b***h’ and telling her to get the f**k out of his house.”
The messages Austin found were mixed with messages of affection and regret from Ellison, he wrote in the post, as well as threats not to come out publically against him.
