CNN Host Just Said He Has Never Called Trump ‘Mentally Unfit,’ Immediately Gets Wrecked

CNN’s Brian Stelter took to social media on Monday to set the record straight about his criticism of President Trump.

The tweet was accompanied by a Fox News article which claimed Stelter was “obsessed” about Trump’s mental fitness and repeatedly called for Trump’s removal from office.

The CNN host subsequently refuted the claims and provided some evidence:

A user responded to the tweet after finding “thousands” of references to Stelter and Trump’s mental capacity.

“I don’t know your search techniques but how come I got so many responses and you got zero?” the user tweeted.

Stelter followed up, “That’s not true. Look at the words I’ve spoken and tweeted — not the headlines written by other people that you screen grabbed”:

The user pressed again, “Well there are 5,215 more if you don’t like the three that were the first to come up.”

And, “If you want to parse the language that’s one thing, but you are claiming there are zero results at all! My search suggests you’re off by about several thousand”:

In the cited articles, the CNN host did question Trump’s ability to properly govern. Per the Daily Caller:

CNN’s Brian Stelter, who criticized other media outlets in 2016 for covering Hillary Clinton’s health issues, claimed Tuesday night that President Trump is mentally “not well” and unfit for office.

Stelter called Trump’s tweets “madness” and argued that Trump’s tweets should count as proof that the president is mentally “not fit for office.”

“When President Trump was inaugurated last January, some columnists started right away to raise concerns about his mental health and fitness for office. In the months that followed, we saw senators like Jeff Flake bring this up, Bob Corker, another name that comes to mind,” Stelter said, before suggesting a “test” for Trump’s tweets.

“We could apply a test to his 16 tweets today. If this were the leader of Germany or China or Brazil, what would we say? How would we cover these tweets? We would say these are the messages from a person who is not well, from a leader who is not fit for office,” Stelter said before host Anderson Cooper pushed back against that characterization.

And, per Yahoo News:

CNN media guru Brian Stelter said Donald Trump is provoking uncomfortable questions regarding the president’s fitness and mental health.

Stelter opened Sunday’s “Reliable Sources” by explaining that many journalists and people working in the news industry have “concerns and fears” about Trump’s ability to run the country.

“Questions that often feel out of bounds, off limits, too hot for TV,” Stelter said. “Questions like these: Is the President of the United States a racist? Is he suffering from some kind of illness? Is he fit for office? And if he’s unfit, then what?”
